The first year of the Physics PhD at UC Davis formally consists of classes filling out the four major branches of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, and Statistical Mechanics. These classes culminate in the Preliminary Exam, or Prelim, a four-day written test spanning all mainstream physics.
